AIR Cookbook Cook-off
Adobe puts a nice initiative to raise the interest towards the AIR cookbook, but only US residents allowed |
Well I’ve submitted 5 articles to the online AIR Cookbook, hoping to get at least one in the paper book.
Today however Adobe disappoints me again:
What :
Adobe AIR Cookbook Cook-off
Who : RIA developers who are legal residents only of the United States
Well congrats to our US RESIDENT colleagues, the rest of us can just code for fun.

We’re all living in America,
America is wunderbar.
:)
What!
I never saw that in the rules. I’ll look again - perhaps it can be contested.
The AIR derby last year was open to non-US citizens, but it wouldn’t let you get past the entry form if you didn’t put in a US phone number.
I also submitted an article. (On undo and redo.) I also wanted to get it into print. Rich Tretola mentioned that there hadn’t been many entries. So, if they throw out those outside the US - the book might end up being a little thin.
I was impressed by your stuff on there, which is why I went searching for your blog.
I’ll add this site to my blogroll (I’d be appreciative if you could reciprocate. my blog at e2easy.wordpress.com)
Well, insular America! - my country should never have granted them independence.

Marin, Daniel,
I manage the AIR Developer Center for the Adobe Developer Connection. Thank you for your posts to the AIR cookbook; the community (and I) very much appreciate you sharing your expertise and helping out. I’d also like to clarify that everyone’s post is considered for publication in O’Reilly’s print version of the upcoming AIR Cookbook (as long as those posting opted for being considered for publication — there is an option to click toward the end of the entry form).
I’d also like to clarify that the AIR Cookbook Cook-off contest is limited to US residents only, because it involves awarding prizes–which hold value–to people who are subject to the tax laws (and other pertinent regulations) of their various localities. The entity awarding the prizes (in this case, O’Reilly Media, Inc.) is to some degree responsible for conducting the contest according to those local rules. Making sure your company is not in violation of another country’s laws and tax regulations regarding contests can become so complex that most contests are of restricted scope: the only reasonable way to hold a small contest of this sort is to limit the amount of legal work you have to put into it in order to make it work at all. Hopefully this clears up the misunderstanding.
Again, thanks for your past (and future) contributions to the developer community.
Michael
Adobe Developer Connection
Hi Michael,
thank you very much for the detailed response.
I actually already spoke with couple of people at Adobe and had the feedback already to a certain extent.
If I were in your shoes guys, I’d put a little explanation (just like the one you just posted), alongside the rules. You know you’d save some frustration :)))
For the print book - I can’t wait really … got some communication with David Tucker already about it !
